Substitutes

Substitute Teaching

To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must carry a Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) certificate.  This permit is valid for five years and is eligible for renewal.  If you are currently carrying a Wyoming Teacher Certificate or Wyoming Substitute permit, you can Apply online by clicking here! to substitute teach in our district.


Requirements

There are two ways to meet the requirements for a substitute teacher permit.  To receive a permit you need to follow on of the paths listed below:

 

College Credit Path

  • Complete at least 60 semester hours or an associate's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams.  If you have taken one or both of these at the college level and can provide transcripts for these courses, you have satisfied this requirement.  If you have not taken these college level courses, you will need to contact our office to arrange for the tests to be administered. (see link to study guides below)
  • Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Education Permit and required documentation (see link to download packet below)
  • PTSB Substitute Application
  • WY Constitution Study Guide
  • US Constitution Study Guide

 

Alternative Path 1 (currently not offered in our district)

  • Hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete 24 hours of in-service training and 30 hours of classroom observation (10 hours at each level: elementary, middle and high school)
  • Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams.  If you have taken one or both of these at the college level and can provide transcripts for these courses, you have satisfied this requirement.  If you have not taken these college level courses, you will need to contact our office to arrange for the tests to be administered. (see link to study guides below)
  • Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Education Permit and required documentation (see link to download packet below)

OR ONSITE TRAINING OFFERED BY SHERIDAN COLLEGE/JOHNSON CAMPUS

Alternative Path 2 

Complete the Effective Substitute Teaching class (EDCI 1005).  This course is offered through Sheridan College at the Johnson County Campus in Buffalo, Wyoming.  The requirements for the course, syllabi and sample schedule are listed below.  This is a 2 week course offered every fall and spring semester.  Tuition for this course is $238 and requires an additional $100 fee payable to PTSB for the application and fingerprint fees.  By the time you have completed the class, you have met the requirements for the 24 hours of in-service training and 30 hours of classroom observation.
